Former cricketers Aakash Chopra and Mohammad Azharuddin have slammed the Indian cricket team’s new selection criteria of the Yo-Yo test which every player needs to pass these days to get into the national team. The Yo-Yo test garnered a lot of attention once again last month after Mohammed Shami and Ambati Rayudu were dropped from the Indian squad for failing the fitness test, days ahead of India’s tour of Ireland and England. Many experts feel Yo-Yo tests are not the best markers for fitness on a cricket field, while former cricketers Chopra and Azhar slammed the policy of dropping of players for failing the test after being picked in the squad. You pass Yo-Yo test, you play. You don’t pass the test, you sit: Shastri”If Virat Kohli fails the test, will you drop him? So if a player does not even get time it is weird. To Kohli, you will even give him 2 weeks because you want him to play. So if a player is not afforded time, it is unfortunate.”But I think Saba Karim (national selector) has said that this is the only time when the selection happened before the test. So I think there will be some parity there,” Chopra said on Sports Tak.Yo-Yo test controversy: BCCI secretary wants Team India to follow proper procedureOff-spinner Harbhajan Singh on the other hand, is of the opinion that a cricketer should be selected on the basis of his skill and not because of the new fitness criteria.advertisement”There is this new drama of Yo-Yo test, which for me does not exist in cricket. This is for footballers and hockey players because in this test, you can run forward once and then run back, which never happens in cricket. And because of this test a very in-form batsman like Ambati Rayudu could not make his place in the Indian team.Looking forward to some difficult cricket in England, says Virat Kohli”I don’t feel Yo-Yo test is the parameter of selection and it should not be. Your form, your skills, that should be the most important thing and there should be a fitness criteria that the whole team can do together,” Bhajji said. Virat Kohli, who came back into the Indian team after recovering from a neck injury, comfortably cleared the Yo-Yo test ahead of India’s tour of Ireland and England (BCCI Photo)The test involves players running between two cones set 20 metres apart on the field. One shuttle includes a process where the player starts on a beep and needs to reach the cone at the other end before the second beep goes off. He is then required to turn back and return to the first cone before the third beep. There are different speed levels for these shuttles. Players start at speed level 5 (one shuttle) before moving to speed level 9 (also one shuttle). Speed level 11 (two shuttes), speed level 12 (three shuttles) and speed level 14 (four shuttles) follow. From speed level 14, there are eight shuttles per level.Former India captain Azharuddin also agreed with Harbhajan and Chopra, stating that match fitness should be taken into account for some players rather than how they perform in the Yo-Yo test.According to Azhar, even a lot of the stalwarts of the past including current India coach Ravi Shastri wouldn’t have passed the test had it been a selection criteria in the past.”It’s true that there has to be a fitness level but there are some players who cannot do a lot of fitness exercises because their bodies don’t allow it. For example, I was quite fit but if I was asked to touch my toes, I could not do that. But when the ball came, I used to field better than most.”If you tell Sunny bhai (Sunil Gavaskar) to do Yo-Yo test, he just won’t be able to do it. Many of our master players cannot do it. So for some players, match fitness should be kept in mind because the fitness of each player is different.”I feel it gets embarrassing for players. They should be told before that you have failed in the yo-yo test and you will not be selected. That will be fine but the players’ ability should also be looked at.”If you have set a fitness parameter like the coach (Ravi Shastri) is saying, the coach could have never passed that yo-yo test. There should be more thought given to this fitness test,” Azhar added.Shastri however, has thrown his weight behind the Yo-Yo test saying that the team management will not compromise on the practice.advertisement”I think it’s a combination of both ability and fitness. If you are fit, you can enhance that ability. That is one thing that has been emphasized on while designing the Yo-Yo fitness test. And it is here to stay. Whoever thinks it’s a one off thing, he is sadly mistaken and that person can take a walk,” Shastri said.”The philosophy is simple. You pass the test, you play. You don’t, you sit. So this is not going to go anywhere. The captain leads from the front, the selectors the management are on the same page. And the boys have responded extremely well,” added Shastri.

Sri Lanka moved a step closer to a 2-0 series sweep over South Africa after the second day of the final Test on Saturday.South Africa’s spin frailties were laid bare once again as the tourists collapsed for 124 to concede a first innings lead of 214 runs at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.Sri Lanka, who made 338 in the first innings, were 151-3 at stumps after deciding not to impose follow-on against the tourists who now stare at the possibility of a second successive Test defeat inside three days.Dimuth Karunaratne was batting on 59 at stumps, his fourth successive 50-plus knock in the series, with Angelo Mathews on 12 at the other end.Keshav Maharaj second South African to take 9 wickets in a Test inningsFor South Africa, left arm-spinner Maharaj took his match-haul to 11 wickets but his team were in dire straits.Earlier resuming the day on 277 for nine, Akila Dananjaya and Rangana Herath frustrated South Africa with a dogged 74-run stand for the final wicket before Maharaj struck when the latter was caught behind for 35. Dananjaya remained unbeaten on 43.Maharaj’s 9-129 is the second best by a South African in Tests, behind only Hugh Tayfield’s 9-113 against England in 1957, but his success brought little cheer to a side battling their own spin vulnerabilities.Herath and Dananjaya (5-42) returned from the innings break to harm South Africa with the new ball, reducing the leaden-footed tourists to 15 for three.Dilruwan Perera (4-40) then joined the rout as South Africa lost all 10 wickets to the Sri Lankan spinners.advertisementFaf du Plessis (48) and Quinton de Kock (32) counter-attacked but it was not enough as the tourists once again failed to reach the 150-mark in the series.(With Reuters inputs)

Earlier this month LG unveiled its next flagship device– LG V40 ThinQ– at an event in New York. The phone besides featuring a military grade body also featured a triple rear camera setup. And now the word is that the company is working on a new phone with four cameras at the back.According to a report by a Dutch site Let’s Go Digital, the Korean electronics giant has filed a patent for a smartphone with four cameras at the phone. Interestingly, the patent design indicates that the phone will not sport a flash at the back. The company has published the design for three phones each of which features slightly more rounded edges than the previous one. While both model A and model B feature rounded edges with thin bezels on top and on the bottom and on the sides, model C comes with edges that are significantly more rounded than the other two models. Additionally, model C comes with a near bezel-less design with thin bezels being present only on the top and on the bottom.Beyond the edges and the bezels, the three models come with a fingerprint scanner which is placed directly beneath the four camera setup which is placed in a square shape at the back of the phone. Another interesting detail about the phone is the absence of a notch. LG’s V and G series smartphones– V40 ThinQ and G7 ThinQ– come with a notch. However, LG’s new patent reveals that the company is planning to keep the things a bit old fashioned and letting go off the notch in its upcoming smartphone.advertisementWhat’s more? The patent reveals that the company is also planning to retain everyone’s favourite 3.5mm jack in its upcoming device. Apart from this, unlike its latest V series and G series smartphones, each of which come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB RAM, up to 128GB internal storage, Android Oreo and advanced audio technologies such as boombox speakers and Hi-Fi Quad DAC, the Korean giant is not planning to add a special button to invoke Google Assistant in the phone.ALSO READ: LG V40 ThinQ: Full specs, top features, India price, and everything you need to knowThe design sketches indicate that the company has already started working on its next device. Xiaomi just launched the Mi Play in China. This budget segment phone is different from all other Xiaomi devices because of the premium look that it sports. TheMi Play is the first phone from the company to have a waterdrop notch display. Looks like Xiaomi is working on another phone with almost the same design as the Mi Play. It is the successor to the Poco F1, aka Poco F2. New concept renders of the Poco F2 has surfaced online revealing that the phone will come with waterdrop style notch on the front panel that will equip the single selfie camera. The concept render shows off the phone from both front and back giving a fair idea of the upcoming Poco F2 could look. The render suggests that the upcoming Poco phone or Poco F2 will be a better-looking device than the Poco F1.The Poco F1 was launched back in the month of August last year and by the end of 2018, it received several awards for being the best value for money phone of 2018. With the success of the Poco F1 consumers now have high expectations from the successor of the phone aka Poco F2. Xiaomi sub-brand is already working on the Poco F2 as we reported that the phone has already made its way to the Geekbench. The benchmark listing revealed some of the key specs of the phone. Now, this is for the first time that render of the Poco F2 has surfaced online revealing the design of the phone.advertisementThe concept render shared by a popular tipster Benjamin Geskin shows the Poco F2 from both front and back. In the render the phone appear in black colour, there could be other colour options too. As the render suggests, the Poco F2 will include a waterdrop notch on the front and not traditional wide notch as seen on the Poco F1. With the inclusion of the tiny teardrop notch, it can be assumed that the Poco F2 will have a bigger screen space which will enable users to have a great video viewing experience on the phone. The bezels of the Poco F2 appears to be much slimmer compared to Poco F1 in the render. The concept render further reveals that similar to the Poco F1, the Poco F2 will also sport dual cameras which will be vertically aligned. But, the placement of the cameras on the Poco F2 will be slightly different from the Poco F1. In the Poco F2, the dual rear cameras will sit on the top left corner. The Poco F1 includes the dual camera set up in the middle of the rear panel. The concept render also reveals that the Poco F2 will come with a rear mounted circular fingerprint sensor. For the Poco F2, Xiaomi could concentrate more on improving the design and camera performance of the phone which were one of the weak areas for Poco F1. Compared to the competitors the Poco F1 isn’t too attractive to look at. Hence, it is possible that Poco might use metallic or glass finish for the Poco F2 to improve the overall look of the phone. The render also shows the back side of the Poco F2 with a metallic finish. As far as the core hardware is concerned, the Geekbench listing revealed that Poco F2 will not have a lot of things changed compared to the Poco F1. The benchmark listing revealed that the Poco F2 will come with the same hardware setup as the Poco F1. The phone is said to be powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset paired with 6GB RAM. As the Poco F1 has 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM variants, we expect an 8GB RAM model for the Poco F2 too.ALSO READ | Poco F2 could be coming soon, gets spotted on Geekbench with some key specsALSO READ | Xiaomi Poco F2 expected to launch soon, but don’t be too excited. Brief Scores: India (299/4; Kohli 104, Dhoni 55 not out) beat Australia (298/9; Marsh 131, Maxwell 48, Bhuvneshwar 4 for 45) by 6 wickets. Full ScorecardMS Dhoni defied age to slam an unbeaten 55 off 54 balls in the unrelenting Adelaide heat as India chased down 299 against Australia with six wickets and four balls to spare. Thanks to Dhoni’s 69th fifty and Virat Kohli’s 39th hundred, India have been able to draw level 1-1 in the three-match series.MS Dhoni’s form was a big talking point ahead of the ODI series. Last year, he managed only 275 runs from 20 ODIs without scoring a fifty. On Saturday, Dhoni ploughed his way to 51 off 96 balls and failed to accelerate as India fell short by 34 runs in the first ODI in Sydney. However, it was a different story on Tuesday at the Adelaide Oval. Faced with a steep chase of 299, India were able to get off to a good start. Shikhar Dhawan (32) and Rohit Sharma (43) played their parts before Virat Kohli took control with a 112-ball 104.It was Kohli’s 82-run stand with MS Dhoni that put India in command. Even after Kohli’s dismissal, India never looked like being out of the fight, thanks in no small measure to Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni, who stayed calm under pressure. This innings must be a huge relief for MS Dhoni fans – over the last year, their hero has had to endure stinging criticism for his inability to finish matches. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said it was important to realise Dhoni was not getting any younger and urged critics to be more patient with him.advertisementMS Dhoni is 37 but the Indian team considers him to be crucial to their plans for the World Cup.”He keeps telling the bowlers to bowl a particular delivery, what a batsman is planning to do. He has a sense of what a batsman is thinking. Obviously, nobody can read precisely what is going on in a batsman mind…the best way to help bowlers, the best way to help field placements for a captain or wicketkeeper is to put himself in that particular batsman’s place or mind. What the batsman is looking to do now…is he looking to get out of jail kind of shot? Is he looking to push the ball ball around for a single? These are the kind of things where Dhoni helps the bowlers and of course with the field placing because Virat is so important in the deep in the final overs when he saves those two runs diving around, takes magnificent catches in the deep. So it’s not possible for Virat to maybe have a conversation with the bowlers or maybe to make adjustments to the square fielders. That is where Virat has complete faith and trust in Dhoni to make those little bit of adjustments for him,” Gavaskar told India Today.”That value you cannot calculate at all. My prayer is to please leave the gentleman alone and he will continue to do well. He is also not getting younger. So the consistency you might have at a younger age will obviously not be there and you have to bear with that. Bear with that little inconsistency. But he’s still tremendous value to the team.”Not just Gavaskar. Virat Kohli, who won the man-of-the-match award for his 104, said Dhoni kept him calm and ensured he did not get too carried away during a tense chase. “Tonight was an MS classic. Only he knows what’s going through his mind. He calculates the game so well. He backs himself to hit those big hits. Hats off to him and Dinesh as well.”He came in and showed the right kind of intent. MS was as composed as ever. We try and help each other… Tonight was special for us,” Kohli said.Gavaskar is also confident Dhoni will get his rhythm back before the World Cup starts.”India now go to New Zealand for the one day series and T20 series then they comeback and play the one day matches against Australia and a couple of T20s. Then the IPL starts. So he’ll be playing pretty much right through till the World Cup starts and he’ll be settled till then. He’ll get a 10-day break before the World Cup starts. I think it would have been ideal had he played a bit of cricket before he came to Australia. Not just he, but Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu also. We can see a little bit of rustiness. Let’s just focus on today, let’s just focus on tomorrow and hope that with the matches in store with the IPL together, India will be ready for World,” he said.advertisementAlso Read | MS Dhoni has done this for years: Dinesh Karthik on match-winning stand in AdelaideAlso Read | Jasprit Bumrah salutes MS Dhoni: Legends don’t need to prove their worth to anyoneAlso Read | MS Dhoni overtakes Virat Kohli for highest average in successful run chases
Ravi Shastri has seen Sachin Tendulkar get “angry at times” but not Mahendra Singh Dhoni, “a once in 40 years player” who will be very difficult to replace once he bids adieu to the game, according to India’s head coach. The 37-year-old Dhoni, who was panned by critics for 51 off 96 balls in the first ODI against Australia, showed glimpses of his golden days by anchoring India to a series win with scores of unbeaten knocks of 55 and 87 in the next two.”He is a legend. He will go down as one of our great cricketers. I have never seen an individual so sound. I have seen Sachin at times get angry. Not this man,” Shastri told the ‘Daily Telegraph’.Shastri made it clear that a player of Dhoni’s caliber can’t be replaced.”You can’t. Such players only come once in 30 or 40 years. That is what I tell the Indians. Enjoy while it lasts. When he goes you will see a void that will be very hard to fill,” he said. The coach is hopeful that Rishabh Pant would live up to the hype surrounding him but insisted that Dhoni is something else.Pant’s hero is MS Dhoni: ShastriWhen former England captain Michael Vaughan asked if Pant could be Dhoni in the next 20 years, Shastri replied: “I would love to. He has the talent. His hero is MS. Every day he is on the phone to MS. I think during the Test series he must have spoken more to MS than anyone else.”advertisementIt’s not just Dhoni’s role as a batsman that defines him but the master strategist in him that takes a lot of load off skipper Kohli’s shoulders.”That is because he has the best angle. He sees things. He is great with the guys, they all worship him. This entire team has been built by him because he was captain for 10 years. To have that kind of respect in the dressing room and experience is massive,” said Shastri. An introvert in the real sense, Dhoni has not given any proper cricketing interview since 2011, says Shastri.”Whether he gets a zero, gets a hundred, whether he wins the World Cup or loses in the first round, MS is the same man. He is simply consistent with his body language and composure. It amazes me how he does it. Since 2011 he has not given one interview.”Also Read | Virat Kohli blasts MS Dhoni critics: He is an intelligent cricketer, give him spaceAlso Read | Ready to bat anywhere for Team India, says MS DhoniAlso Read | Born to chase: MS Dhoni leaves fans awestruck after MCG masterclassAlso Read | Virat Kohli becomes first Indian captain to win Test and ODI series in Australia
Pakistan’s banned Test batsman Sharjeel Khan has accepted all five charges imposed on him by the Anti-Corruption Tribunal of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as he targets an early comeback to domestic cricket.Khan is serving a five-year ban, half of which is suspended, for his role in spot-fixing scandal during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in February, 2017.Khan’s lawyer Shaighan Ejaz confirmed that his client has filed an application with the PCB chairman to allow him to play domestic cricket before his ban expires at end of August this year.”Sharjeel has in his application accepted the ban imposed on him by the tribunal which means that he has accepted the five charges that were laid out against him under the anti-corruption code,” Ejaz said.”We have asked the PCB chairman to allow Sharjeel to resume playing club and domestic cricket before his ban ends in August. The Chairman has to get approval of the Board of Governors to allow this under a clause of the anti-corruption code,” the lawyer said.Ejaz said that in his application, Khan, 29, admitted to his mistakes. He was accused of breaching five clauses of the anti-corruption code. He has played one Test, 25 ODIs and 15 T20 internationals for Pakistan. One of the more serious charges against Khan is that he had met with a suspected bookmaker and agreed to spot-fixing with him during the first match of the second PSL.The same suspected bookie, Yousuf Anwar has now been charged by the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom for bribery and corruption and is facing trial in a magistrate’s court.advertisementThe UK Crime Agency has also charged Pakistan’s discarded Test opener, Nasir Jamshed, who resides in the UK.Jamshed was named a key suspect in the PSL spot-fixing scandal last year and is suspected of having introduced Sharjeel, Khalid Latif and other players of the Pakistan team to Yousuf and other bookies. The UK agency is investigating spot-fixing and bribery by the trio in T20 leagues held by the Bangladesh and Pakistan cricket boards. Also Read | Inzamam-ul-Haq could double up as Pakistan’s batting coach ahead of World CupAlso Read | Sarfraz Ahmed personally apologises to Phehlukwayo for racist comments

Though Abhishek Verma, 29, started shooting to get away from textbooks, the new World No. 3 has sealed an Olympic berth for India by winning gold at Beijing’s ISSF World Cup last monthQ. What did you do differently to take,Though Abhishek Verma, 29, started shooting to get away from textbooks, the new World No. 3 has sealed an Olympic berth for India by winning gold at Beijing’s ISSF World Cup last monthQ. You finished 24th at your first World Cup in February. What did you do differently to take top spot in Beijing?A. I realised after my first World Cup that I was having a hard time handling the pressure during the last few shots. So, I worked on maintaining my composure, so that even if I had a few bad shots, I would still be able to execute my plan.Q. You have a degree in engineering and law. Why take up shooting at an age when most people choose to focus on their careers?A. I picked up shooting as a distraction from my law studies while at home in Hisar. I started with a rifle before picking up the pistol in December 2014. It all changed when I won gold at a state-level competition in Haryana in 2015. So when I found the right coach, Omendra Singh, there was no looking back.Q. How different would things have been had you started shooting in your teens?A. I think I took less time to understand the sport, since I started at a later age. I tend to grasp things faster and I think that being mature really helped me progress rapidly.Q. Are you aware of another Abhishek Verma, who is an arms dealer?A. I’m off social media because I prefer to stay in the real world rather than the virtual one. But I know that there is a third Abhishek Verma as well, who’s into archery. These are times when it is possible to even confuse Google!advertisement
Trick question: What year was the 1st ever Cricket World Cup played in? 1975. Wrong answer. Women actually beat men in this regard as the correct answer is actually 1973 – the year of the 1st Women’s World Cup. It was only two years later that men cricketers got to play their maiden World Cup in June 1975.While the tournament, at least initially, was thought of as an experiment by the purists, no one had imagined the kind of impact it would leave on the game’s future. 10 more such tournaments later, the doubters from 1975 couldn’t be more wrong as the World Cup has emerged as the biggest stage in world cricket.West Indies who were on their way to almost 20-years-long world domination emerged as the winners of the 1st World Cup held in England after they beat Australia by 17 runs in the final at Lord’s.With a total of just 18 ODIs being played before the tournament started, the World Cup was destined to set a precedent for the future and it did so by producing many enthralling contests, close finishes and moments of brilliance from the players. We take a look at some of the interesting facts and figures from the 1975 World Cup:8 teams, 5 days and 4000 PoundsBesides the 6 Test playing nations – Australia, New Zealand, England, India, Pakistan, West Indies – 2 more participants were accommodated in the tournament. While Sri Lanka was the obvious 1st choice, East Africa (a combined team of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia) was included to make it an even eight-team tournament.advertisementBesides all the competition, the prize money that was pocketed by winners West Indies was a mere 4000 Pounds with Australia pocketing 2000 Pounds and a consolatory award of 1000 Pounds each to the losing semi-finalists England and New Zealand. Also, the tournament was only played over 5 days with multiple matches being organized simultaneously. Comparing this with the 6 weeks long schedule and $4 million prize money of the 2019 World Cup, one can see how far the sport has progressed since.Madan Lal ‘the First’ and ‘Slow Sunny’Indian medium pacer Madan Lal etched his name firmly in the annals of World Cup history as he bowled the 1st ball ever in World Cup history. Fellow seamer Mohinder Amarnath however, picked up the 1st ever wicket to fall in a World Cup when he dismissed England opener, John Alexander Jameson. But the joy of Indians was shortlived as England piled up 334/4 in their 60 overs. In reply, opener Sunil Gavaskar played inarguably the strangest and slowest innings in ODIs as he carried his bat for an unbeaten 36 off 174 balls! The particular innings garnered widespread criticism with even the Indian team manager Gulabrai Ramchand terming it “the most disgraceful and selfish performance” he had seen. India’s final score was 132/3 and they lost the match by 202 runs!Thomson breathes fireDuring the 7th league match, Jeff Thomson was called upon to stifle Sri Lanka’s spirited chase of 329 by Australian captain Ian Chappell. Though he only picked up a solitary wicket during the innings, his high-octane bowling sent back two Lankan batsmen to the pavilion being retired hurt.First Duleep Mendis was hit on the head by a rearing fast bouncer forcing the batsman to leave the field abruptly. Next in the firing line was opener Sunil Wettimuny who was initially tested with bouncers before a fast yorker broke his foot. Unsurprisingly, Sri Lanka were restricted to 276/4, losing the match by 52 runs.Despair for IndiaIndia arrived for the World Cup having played just 2 ODIs before the tournament. The inexperience was on show in plenty when the matches started as India managed to win just a single game out of 3 – against minnows East Africa. India lost their last game against New Zealand by 4 wickets to bow out of the inaugural edition empty-handed.Notwithstanding the criticism for his 36* against England, Gavaskar still finished as the highest run-getter for India – thanks largely to his 65* versus East Africa. Seamer Abid Ali with 6 wickets finished as the leading wicket-taker for the country.Key stats from 1975 World Cup:Team records -Highest Team Total: England 334/4 vs IndiaLowest Team Total: Sri Lanka 86 all-out vs West IndiesHighest successful chase: West Indies 267/9 vs Pakistan 266/7Individual Records -Most Runs: 333 – Glenn Turner (New Zealand)Highest Score: 171* – Glenn TurnerMost Wickets: 11 – Gary Gilmour (Australia)Best Bowling figures: 6/14 – Gary Gilmour vs EnglandAlso Read | Where are India’s 2011 World Cup winners? Also Read | World Cup 2019: 5 pacers likely to make a huge impact in England
